A Short Tribute To A Veteran Of The Great War - whose sacrifice cost this world his progeny
Thurston Vern BAILEY (brother of my grandfather Russell) was born 14 Apr 1895 in Carlton, Thayer Co, NE. "Bill" ws a fine athlete for Hebron High School. Thurston joined the Army on 9 Sep 1917. He was promoted to Sergeant in Company M, 355th Infantry, 89th Division, on 8 Jan 1918 and was entitled to wear two gold service chevrons. He saw action in the following campaigns:
8 Aug 1918 - 11 Aug 1918 - Lucey Sector, France.
12 Sep 1918 - 16 Sep 1918 - St Miheil Offensive.
17 Sep 1918 - 7 Oct 1918 - Euvezin, France.
19 Oct - 1918 - 11 Nov 1918 - Meuse - Argonne Offensive.
Upon returning home from the war he was plagued by the effects of poisonous gas that he was exposed to and was placed in a medical facility where he lived until his death, 12 Sep 1986, in Gillette, Campbell Co, WY.
World War II - David A. Grimm, 96th Infantry "Deadeyes" Division (WIA - Okinawa)

In Honor of WWII Pacific War Veterans CPL David A. Grimm, U.S. Army , C Company, 1st Bn 381st Regiment, 96th Infantry Div,(WIA - Okinawa) and
LCPL Edward N. Brennan, 3rd Bn 9th Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Division,USMC (WIA-Iwo Jima)


CPL David Grimm, from Wyomissing PA, was a combat radio operator in the 10th Army, 96th Infantry Div. He was first wounded in hand-to-hand combat in the Philippines. Later, during the invasion of Okinawa, he was hit by a mortar explosion to the head. The shell caused a fracture of the skull and serious brain damage along with blindness for a time. When transported to the hospital ship, Comfort,he was thought to be dying and removed for those expected to live. The Comfort was hit by a Kamikaze which killed the doctors and all the wounded.
96th Infantry Division

LCPL Edward "Bill" Brennan, US Marines BAR gunner, was severely wounded while fighting with 3rd Bn 9th Marines on Iwo Jima. Combat medics savd his life, pinning and dressing his extensive intestinal wounds. He was unconcious for several weeks and spent two years in extensive surgery and rehab at Chelsea Naval Hospital after the war.
